The use of academic vocabulary in English department students' thesis : A Corpus-Based Lexical study

Penggunaan kosakata akademik sangat penting untuk karya akademik atau Skripsi mereka. Bagaimanapun, sering terjadi kesulitan pada mahasiswa untuk mencari kata yang cocok untuk karya akademik mereka. Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengeksplorasi penggunaan Coxhead (2000) Academic Word List(AWL) di dalam bab empat dan lima dari Skripsi yang telah diterbitkan di jurusan bahasa Inggris. Untuk menyelidiki pengunaan AWL di Skripsi jurusan bahasa Inggris, penelitian ini mengumpulkan 40 Skripsi yang telah dipublikasikan pada 2014 dari perpustakaan jurusan bahasa Inggris. Seluruh bab empat dan lima dipilih secara acak dan dianalisa menggunakan aplikasi VocabProfile dari Compleat Lexical Tutor, sebuah perangkat lunak yang digunakan untuk melakukan analisis leksikal pada text dan menghitung kemunculan suatu kosakata. Temuan utama pada penelitian ini bahwa AWL acapkali digunakan di Skripsi jurusan bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa Skripsi jurusan bahasa Inggris mempunyai 21.914 kemunculan (7.89%) AWL dari 274.628 total kata yang terhitung. Kosakata akademik yang memiliki frekuensi tinggi juga tersedia di penelitian ini untuk membantu mahasiswa bahasa Inggris pada pengunaan kosakata akademik yang tepat.

English Department, Faculty of Language and Art, State University of Jakarta. The use of academic vocabulary is fundamental for English departments students’ academic paper or thesis. However, it is often causes difficulty for language learner to find a suitable word for their academic paper. The main purpose of this study is to explore the use of Coxhead’s (2000) Academic Word List (AWL) in the chapter four and five of published English Department students’ thesis. To investigate the use of AWL vocabulary in English Department, the study collected 40 theses published in 2014 from English Department’s library. The entire selected chapter four and five were chosen randomly and were analyzed with the VocabProfile application of Compleat Lexical Tutor, a software package that is used to perform lexical text analysis and measure the occurrence of a vocabulary. The major findings of this study were that Coxhead’s AWL was frequently used in English Department students’ thesis. This study also found that English Department’s theses have 21,914 occurrences (7.98%) of AWL from 274,628 running words or tokens. This frequency considered inadequate for an academic text. Although from overall frequency considered inadequate, does not means all the corpus has inadequate frequency of AWL. In the other hand, there are phenomena that found in this study, those are the occurrence of non-English word which occurred in substantial number. High-frequency academic vocabulary also provided in this study to assist English Department students their appropriate use of academic vocabulary.
