The analysis of passive voice form error in ED students' writing

Studi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kesalahan penggunaan bentuk kalimat pasif mahasiswa di kelas English for Academic Communication angkatan 2013. Error analysis digunakan untuk menganalisis kesalahan yang ditemukan dalam tulisan mahasiswa. Sumber data yang digunakan adalah 30 karangan esai mahasiswa. Data yang diperoleh dikategorisasikan dalam jenis-jenis kalimat pasif berdasarkan teori Azar (2000), yang kemudian dihitung untuk menentukan frekuensi kesalahan yang ditunjukkan dengan prosentase. Studi ini juga menjabarkan beberapa penyebab yang mempengaruhi kesalahan tersebut berdasarkan teori Richards (1971). Temuan yang didapat menunjukkan bahwa ada empat tipe kesalahan bentuk kalimat pasif, antara lain; simple present, simple past, present perfect, dan simple future. Kesalahan pada jenis simple present melampaui yang lainnya yaitu 7 kesalahan (43%), diikuti simple future, simple past dan present perfect masing-masing 3 kesalahan (19%). Selain itu, penyebab kesalahan didominasi oleh intralingual errors dengan prosentase 100%. Studi ini diharapkan dapat menjadi acuan mahasiswa yang melakukan penelitian di bidang yang sama.

This study aims at finding the students’ errors in using passive voice form in English for Academic Communication class, year 2013. Error analysis is used as a tool in analyzing the errors found in their writing. The data sources are 30 students’ writing. The obtained data were categorized under the types of passive voice form based on Azar (2000). The data, then, were counted for the error frequency which is shown by percentage. This study also provides the possible causes of the errors based on the theory by Richards (1971). The findings show that there are four types of passive voice form errors: simple present, simple past, present perfect, and simple future. The simple present error excelled the others with 7 errors (43%), followed by simple future, simple past, and present perfect with the same amount of portion that is 3 errors (19%). While on the possible causes of the errors, the intralingual errors take the charge with 100%. This study is expected to be a reference for students who take the same field of research.
