THE PSYCHOLOGICAL CONFLICTS OF MAIN CHARACTER IN DAN BROWN NOVELS “THE LOST SYMBOL” (Psychology of Literature) 2015

ABSTRACT
This study aims to gain an understanding of how psychological conflicts the main character in the novel The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. To determine this, researchers conducted in-depth reading on the novel by finding out how the lifetime of the major figures ranging from adolescence to adulthood, with emphasis on the important moments faced by the main character, as a person, the head of the family and society members of secret organization in America. This study was conducted in Cilegon, from June 2014 until July 2015. Since this is a qualitative research and the researchers themselves are the instrument, then the many activities carried out by the study of literature. The method used in this research is content analysis method with qualitative approach is then discussed with the theory of psychoanalysis. The results of this study indicate that the main character in the novel The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown suffered a series of psychological conflict during his lifetime, which is dominated by interpersonal conflict. With a flexible personality, assertive and friendly, so the number of conflicts he faced successfully bypassed by using a self-defense mechanism (defense mechanism), which is generally done by means of rationalization.
