Attitude markers in English department students' informative speech

Attitude markers adalah salah satu bagian dari kategori interactional metadiscourse yang merujuk kepada sikap dari penulis atau pembicara yang digunakan untuk membuat pembaca atau pendengar setuju dengan sudut pandangnya. Tujuan dari studi ini adalah menganalisa bagaimana attitude markers digunakan oleh 13DBR pada jurusan bahasa inggris dalam pidato informatif mereka. 16 pidato direkam dan diubah kedalam bentuk teks, lalu dianalisa menggunakan model attitude markers Hyland (2005) yang dikategorikan kedalam attitude verb, adverb, dan adjective. Hasil dari studi ini menunjukan bahwa penggunaan adjective adalah yang tertinggi dengan 52,15% disusul dengan attitude verb sebanyak 46,63% dan adverb dengan 1,23%. Tingginya penggunaan adjektif menandakan bahwa pembicara ingin menunjukan sikap mereka terhadap topic yang dibawakan.

Attitude markers is one of interactional metadiscourse categories which refers to speaker’ or writer’s attitude toward the topic delivered which used to make listener or reader agree to his or her point of view. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the attitude markers are used by 13DBR at English Department students in their informative speech. 16 speech performances were recorded and transcribed, then analyzed by using Hyland(2005) model of attitude markers, namely attitude verb, adverb, and adjective. The result of this study showed that adjective were the most dominantly appeared with 52,15% followed by attitude verb with 46,63% and adverb with 1,23%. The high use of adjectives indicates that the speakers want to show their personal attitude toward the topic.
