ABSTRACT
The goal of this research is to know the readability level of Textbook “Bina Bahasa Indonesia” for The Fifth Grade Students of Elementary School published by E, in SDN Pademangan Timur 04 Petang North Jakarta Using Fog Index and Cloze Test.
This research was done in SDN Pademangan Timur 04 Petang North Jakarta or to the fifth grade exactly. It was done by using discourse gaps that's taken from each chapter on the book.
The results of the research show that the first discourse has average readability level with students' understanding score 55%, the second discourse has average readability level with students' understanding score 52,2%, and the third discourse has high readability level with students' understanding score 61,5%.
Because of those results we can conclude that the book has average readability level with the average score of students' understanding scores toward the first up to the third discourse is 56,2%. That means the book is usable with needing help of explanation.
The implication of the result in this research is that the choosing of textbook which has high readability level is important to make students understand the material on it easily.
