The circumstances ofthe communicative processes in English classes as reflected in teacher's lesson plans : a systemic functional analysis
The study aimed to analyse English learning and teaching processes as reflected in teachers’ lesson plans. The study focused on the circumstances of communicative processes that relate to the functioning of social functions, text structures and language features as reflected in teachers’ lesson plans. The systemic functional method was used in this research focusing on the experiential metafunction in transitivity aspect. Transitivity system was used in analyzing the data as the data were in the form of clauses that is analyzed using transitivity. Transitivity system was used in analyzing the data as the study dealt with the learning and teaching processes that the students experience.The data consisted of 231 clauses taken from the core activity sections of 9 lesson plans designed by 6 teachers from 3 Senior High School (SHS) in Jakarta: 78 clauses from 3 transactional text lesson plans, 53 clauses from 3 specific functional text lesson plans and 99 clauses from 3 functional text lesson plans. Each clauses was analysed using transitivity system to identify the processes, participants and circumstances. The circumstances were analysed based on three aspects: the functioning of social functions contextually, the use of text structures and the use of language features. The circumstances qualify the communicative processes were stated 0% in 231 clauses from all lesson plans. The study indicated the circumstances qualify the communicative processes were not planned by the teachers in the lesson plans and implied the learning and teaching activities did not support the students to utilize the text to perform the social functions contextually. The study discovered the social functions, text structures and language elements were identified solely as the concept to be learned by the students.
