THE EFFECT OF LEARNING STRATEGIES AND COGNITIVE STYLE ON THE LEARNING OUTCOMES OF ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS

ABSTRACT
This research was intended to investigate the effect of problem solving learning strategies and expository learning strategies and cognitive style of students to the learning outcomes of Elementary Mathematic. This research was an experimental applying design factorial 2x2. The data were analysed by employing variance analysis. The result was the application of problem solving strategies provides better learning outcomes compared to the application of expository learning strategies to the course Elementary Mathematics and learning outcomes of "Elementary Mathematics" in groups of students with independent cognitive style was higher than cognitive styles field dependent, and proved that there was an influence of interaction between learning strategies and students' cognitive style. Furthermore, in the group of students with field independent cognitive style, the application problem solving strategies provided better learning outcomes compared to the application of expository learning strategies, while in the group of students with field dependent cognitive style, learning outcomes of students taught with problem solving strategies lower than the group taught with expository strategies. The application of problem solving strategies in the field independent cognitive style student group provided better learning outcomes compared to the field dependent cognitive style, on the contrary the application of expository learning strategies in the student group field dependent cognitive style provided better learning outcomes compared to the cognitive style field independent.
