ABSTRACT
Ervika Ichwan, 2015. The Representation of Contemporary Hipster Subculture in Youth in Revolt Magazine. Thesis. Jakarta: English Language and Literature Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, State University of Jakarta.
This study aims to analyse how the contemporary hipster subculture is represented in articles of Youth in Revolt magazine. The representation of contemporary hipster subculture is delivered through process, mood, and theme that are well-structured in each clause. The process, mood, and theme are the expression of three language metafunctions developed by M.A.K. Halliday in Systemic Functional Linguistics theory. The three metafunctions are ideational metafunction, interpersonal metafunction, and textual metafunction. In ideational metafunction, the text functions to represent the experience through processes. In interpersonal metafunction, the text is expressed through mood (declarative, interrogative, and imperative) to deliver the message and influence the readers. While in textual metafunction, the text functions to carry and organise the main discourse or topic by using thematic structure. The data of this study are the clauses taken randomly from five editorial articles of Youth in Revolt magazine. The descriptive analytical method is used to analyse the data by using M.A.K. Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics as the approach. Overall, the result of this reasearch reveals that the contemporary hipster subculture is represented as a group of youth who likes to experiment with shrooms, acid, weed, and alcohol, consume TV program with sexual content, create unique and provocative art, wear vintage items like their grandfather’s sweaters, make custom tattoo designs, frequent second-hand stalls, appreciate unique art from unfamous artists, and also reject the norm of society such as opposing the mainstream political view and politicians through the frequent use of material process. While through other processes like relational, mental verbal process, the contemporary hipster is represented as creative, unique, and cool individual who likes to think deeper and wants to know anything before anyone else. The representation of contemporary hipster subculture in editorial articles of Youth in Revolt magazine is mostly delivered through statements by using the declarative mood and topical participant theme to emphasize the subject, situation or condition in each clause which construe the message about the representation of contemporary hipster in all articles of Youth in Revolt magazine.
