THE DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS’ SOFT SKILLS THROUGH SOCIALEMOTIONAL
LEARNING (SEL) APPROACH IN HYDROCARBON
COMPOUND AND ITS DERIVATIVES
ABSTRACT
The classroom action research was conducted in class XI Electrical
Engineering Program at SMK Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Jakarta in the second semester
of 2015 / 2016 academic year. The research focuses on developing soft skills with
social-emotional learning approaches on the material hydrocarbon compounds and
their derivatives. Classroom action research was conducted in three cycles with
differences on different type of problems and projects. Soft skills development was
focused on core competencies of SEL which are Self Awareness, Self Management,
Social Awareness, Relationship Management, Responsible Decision Making. Data
collection for soft skills development conducted through Social-Emotional Learning
Survey (SELS) questionnaires, reflective journals, observation and interviews.
Quality standards are implemented in this research including prolonged
engagement, persistent observation, progressive subjectivity and member checking.
The research results show students’ soft skills of (1) Work Confidence; (2)
Persistence; (3) Organisation; (4) Resilience; (5) Relationship Management; (6)
Social Awareness; (7) Responsible Decision Making were developed throughout
three cycles. In addition to soft skills, students’ conceptual understanding and project
results of students are improved. The results of this study have provided learning
experiences and new perceptions for students in learning chemistry.
