Paraphrasing strategy in the English department students' skripsi

This study aimed to know paraphrase strategy encountered students’ skripsi of English Department and to know the fulfillment of good paraphrase standard on students’ skripsi. The focus of this study is limited to the literature review section which contained the most paraphrased. This research took place in UNJ from February to June. The data was taken from four skripsi of English Department graduated year 2016 and 2017. The researcher selected 16 paraphrases. The selected paraphrase was then compared with the original text before it was finally analyzed using Schuemann (2006); Kirszner (2008)’s theory which the first stage using four paraphrase forming strategies: 1) changing its synonyms; 2) changing part of speech; 3) changing the sentence pattern from active to passive; 4) keep using keywords from the original text. The study revealed that of the 16 selected paraphrases, the most commonly used strategy was to change the synonyms with percentage 100% of 16 paraphrases. Other strategies such as changing the part of speech around (3 paraphrases) 19%, changing the order of active sentence to passive around (9 paraphrases) 56% and the strategy keep using the same keywords around (7) 44%. On the other hand, almost all paraphrases already fulfill the standard of good paraphrase. The result showed the quality of paraphrase reached 75% with good quality.
