Dalam menulis proposal penelitian, mahasiswa harus bisa mengembangkan ide penulisan mereka. Dalam hal ini, parafrase adalah salah satu teknik yang dapat digunakan untuk menghindari plagiarisme. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis penggunaan parafrase dalam proposal penelitian mahasiswa Academic Writing 2 di jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, mulai bulan September sampai dengan November 2015. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah content analysis. Data penelitian ini adalah parafrase dalam proposal penelitian mahasiswa Academic Writing 2. Kriteria parafrase dari Sorenson menjadi teori yang digunakan dalam menganalisis data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari total 105 parafrase yang dianalisis, ada 88,5% dari parafrase memenuhi kriteria, (1) the paraphrase presents the same idea as the original passage; 8,5% untuk kriteria parafrase (2) The vocabulary of paraphrase is different from the original passage; 15,2% parapfrase memenuhi kriteria (3) Complicated ideas are modified into simple sentences; 82,5% memenuhi kriteria (4) The paraphrase and the original are nearly the same length; 29,5% memenuhi kriteria (5) Words are shorter in the paraphrase; 15,2% memenuhi kriteria (6) No plagiarism has crept in; dan 100% parafrase memenuhi kriteria (7) Sentence structure, mechanics, usage and grammar are accurate . 74% dari parafrase yang telah dianalisis menyalin materi dari sumbernya secara langsung ke dalam proposal. Di sisi lain, hampir semua mahasiswa sudah mengerti cara menghindari tindakan plagiarisme karena 89,5% dari parafrase memberikan sumber yang lengkap. In writing research proposal, students must be able to develop their ideas. In this case, paraphrasing is one of techniques that can be used to avoid plagiarism. This study was conducted to analyze the use of paraphrase in Academic Writing 2 students’ research proposal. The study was conducted at English Department of State University of Jakarta, from September until November 2015. The research method of the study is content analysis. The data of the study are the paraphrases in Academic Writing 2 students’ research proposal. Sorenson’s paraphrasing criteria is used to analyze the data. The result of the study shows from that the total of 105 paraphrases, there are 88.5% of paraphrases that fulfill the criteria of paraphrasing; (1) the paraphrase presents the same idea as the original passage; 8.5% of paraphrases fulfill the criteria of (2) The vocabulary of paraphrase is different from the original passage; 15.2% fulfill the criteria of(3) Complicated ideas are modified into simple sentences; 82,5% of paraphrase fulfill the criteria of (4) The paraphrase and the original are nearly the same length; 29.5% of paraphrases fulfill the criteria of (5) Words are shorter in the paraphrase; 15.2% of paraphrases fulfill the criteria of (6) No plagiarism has crept in; and all of paraphrases (100%) fulfill the criteria of (7) Sentence structure, mechanics, usage and grammar are accurate. 74% of the paraphrases are copying from the original passage directly into the proposal. However, most of students already know how to avoid plagiarism because 89.5% of paraphrases provide clear sources.
