Multiple intelligences in reading passages of English national Examination for junior high school

Assessment should be intelligence-fair and not have to rely completely on
linguistic or logical intelligence (Gardner, 1983). Gardner’s theory of Multiple
Intelligences differentiates human intelligence into eight types: Verbal/Linguistic,
Logical/Mathematical, Visual/Spatial, Bodily/Kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal,
Intrapersonal and Naturalist. National examination is expected to adjust various
intelligence profile of students to avoid bias. The present study, therefore, aimed
to analyze the density of Multiple Intelligences in reading passages and reading
comprehension questions of English National Examination for junior high school,
in order to find out whether the reading passages and reading comprehension
questions have addressed all the eight intelligences or biased toward particular
type of intelligences. This study is a descriptive qualitative research attempted to
investigate materials contained in English National Examination. The data of this
study was Multiple Intelligences presented in reading passages and reading
comprehension questions of English National Examination for junior high school
year 2017 and 2018. The findings reveal (1)In terms of content, reading passages
of UN year 2017 & 2018 were predominantly the combination of two
intelligences: Interpersonal and Spatial/Visual; (2)In terms of word and non-word
representations, reading passages of UN year 2017 & 2018 were predominantly of
Verbal/Linguistic intelligence and; (3)In terms of the thinking strategies, reading
comprehension questions of UN year 2017 & 2018 were predominantly the
combination of two intelligences: Logical/Mathematical and Verbal/Linguistic.
