John Crawfurd's (1783-1868) Indonesian manuscript collection containing 132 Indonesian-language manuscripts in the British Library, London, is one of the most important single collections of Indonesian manuscripts in Great Britain. The collection of Javanese manuscripts was collected during the short-lived British occupation of Java (1811-16) at the end of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe (1799-1815), and began to be built following the looting of the Yogyakarta palace which followed the British dawn attack on 20 June 1812. Almost ignored for 130 years, it became better known following the Oriental Documents Committee of the British Academy's publication of some of the material contained in the Collection in 1980 with a second volume in 2000. This focused initially on four volumes containing material of a non-literary nature dated between 1772-1813 (AJ1698 and AJ 1740). These materials consist of official reports, letters, land grants, legal codes and letters from the Yogyakarta secretarial archive, as well as the private papers of the second and third sultans. This article considers the importance of these sources in terms of the political, economic, social, and administrative history of Yogyakarta in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, as well as describing the types of paper used. An appendix lists 75 Javanese scripts from the Yogyakarta Palace recently digitized by the British Library in 2018-19.
